The sermon, "'My Best' Year"
Michael Phelps was disappointed with his world-record breaking 100 Meter Butterfly performance at the Olympics last week. Why? He was faster than the rest in the race, faster than he had ever been before--in fact, faster than anyone in the world had ever swam before. Why disappointed? "I could have gone faster (had his goggles not malfunctioned and filled with water, blinding him for much of the race).
"My best" is not found in relationship to my peers or in relationship to what I may have done in the past. It is only found in relation to what I can do now, today, this moment, if I bring my all to the task at hand. Paul wrote to the Colossian church of the preeminence of Christ in all of human history before beginning the third chapter: "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of the father." He goes on to tell the church to put off the old nature and put on the nature of Christ. MY BEST...right here, right now.
