Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Translation: we love those things we invest in--and we invest in those things we love. The more I give of myself time-wise, energy-wise, money-wise, the more my affection grows for that object--be it sports or a home or the family or, perhaps, the church.
At Liberty Crossings, when we talk of giving, it is always within the context of our relationship with God. The writer of Psalms proclaimed the foundational reality of our world and our species: "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him." The mountains, the sea, the vegetation, the wildlife, the people, the strong back, the healthy mind, the loving family, the privileged life, and yes, the money, all belong to this wonderfullly generous heavenly Father who longs to know and bless his children.
When we put our money in the offering plate or send a check to the church, we fully understand that all we are doing is returning to God that which is already his. How much should I give? In Jesus' day, a poor widow put a couple of coins to the Temple offering and Jesus celebrated her faith and generosity. Why? Because while others were giving out of their excess, she gave all that she had. How much will you give in proportion to what you have? We would all do well to remember that "to whom much is given, of him much will be required."
Whatever you give--whether to Liberty Crossings or to some other church family--our suggestion would be that you give until it feels good...until it feels right...until it truly becomes a spiritual event and a love offering to God.
